2026 Jeep Cherokee Driven: Gains in the Powertrain

I almost thought I was driving the wrong car

The first time I stepped on the accelerator, I was really stunned. Can the 2026 Cherokee 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder machine make such a full sound? It was not that hoarse dry roar, but a low-frequency roar with a little thickness. The old 2.4L "anticlimactic" engine was finally completely abandoned. The new powertrain dragged you forward from the beginning, and the turbo lag was so small that it could be almost ignored. While waiting for the red light, I stared blankly at the torque curve on the dashboard-peak torque started pouring from 2000 rpm and didn't fall back slightly until nearly 5000 rpm. It feels like a husky you've been raising for ten years suddenly learned to hold a Frisbee, and the surprise is a little unreal.

The gearbox finally no longer "thinks about life"

The shifting logic of the previous 9-speed automatic transmission is a mystery-suddenly downshifting two gears during high-speed cruising, or slowly upshifting when you rush to connect. But the 2026 gearbox adjustment is like a batch of engineers have been changed, or the engineers have finally drunk the right coffee. The response in manual mode is terrifyingly fast. When the paddle touches, the gear clicks. What surprised me the most was the low-speed crawling. In stop-and-go traffic jams, it no longer arched forward as before, but was smooth like a CVT. You can even hold the steering wheel with one hand and play with your mobile phone with the other hand (of course, this is not recommended), and it will quietly follow the car itself.

Trail Rated version? This is real muscle

I specially borrowed a Trail Rated four-wheel drive version to take advantage of the bad road. The abundance of the low twist makes me a little overpowering-after hanging on the 4-Lo, the engine can easily push the car over a large rock at 1500 rpm, and the voice is calm and there is no such hoarse gasping. Previously, Cherokee's four-wheel drive always felt like a "girly off-road", with excessive electronic slip restrictions, as if someone was directing blindly behind you. But the 2026 model's slip limit logic is much smarter. When the rear axle differential lock locks, you can feel the tires looking for traction, rather than the system braking crazily. I even turned off the ESP when climbing the steep slope, but it climbed steadily up based on torque distribution. Although the rear of the car was covered with mud, the original mechanical feeling made me shout out.

But the interior is still a bit "refined"

The powertrain gave full marks, but you can still find some Cherokee's old problems when you sit in the car. The plastic parts of the center console will still make a small squeaking sound on bumpy roads, like a "mouse gnawing on wood" noise coming from deep in the instrument console. However, the new seats are worth a blow-the softness of the fillers is at least two levels higher than the previous generation, and the waist and tail are not sore after driving for four hours. In addition, the 10.1-inch touch screen is finally no longer a "fingerprint collector". The new UI response speed is similar to that of the iPad, and the pairing time of wireless CarPlay has been shortened from the original 15 seconds to 3 seconds. But these improvements in details have confused me even more: Why can't Jeep make the interior as amazing as the powertrain?

Fuel consumption? Don't ask, asking is a "happy table"

The official nominal comprehensive fuel consumption is 8.6L/100km, but I drove 9.8L in congested urban roads. But considering that the engine seemed to have changed its character after the turbine intervention, I think it was worth the money for fuel. When running at high speed, the fixed speed is 120km/h, and the speed is just 1900rpm. The fuel consumption can easily reach about 7.5L. If you are willing to use sports mode-in that mode, the gearbox will be maintained at a high speed range and there will even be a slight backfire sound in the exhaust-fuel consumption will instantly soar to more than 11L, but the feeling of the throttle and the foot makes people can't stop. I suggest clearing the odometer every time you fill up, and then pretend you don't see the real-time fuel consumption.

Summary: It finally deserves the name "Cherokee"

The powertrain upgrade of the 2026 Cherokee is not the kind of annual change that "changes the soup without changing the medicine", but truly injects a hardcore soul into the bone marrow of a grocery shopping SUV. Although the cheapness of the interior and the occasional noise will still remind you that "this is just a Jeep", you will forgive it when you step on the accelerator, listen to the rhythm of the engine, and feel the precise shifting rhythm of the gearbox. All shortcomings. It feels like the girl you had a crush on many years ago. Her hair is messy and she is wearing a larger sweater, but the tiger teeth that show when you smile make you feel like the whole world is bright.
