Instrumented Tests

Tested: 2026 Toyota Camry Nightshade

To be honest, I didn't expect much from Camry Nightshade at first. After all, the "blackened Camry" sounds like a slap on the forehead by Toyota's marketing department-replacing black wheels, blackening headlights, and charging you thousands more. But after testing the 2026 model, I admitted that I was wrong. This car... tsk, it's interesting.

Appearance: Dark is finally not greasy

The Nightshade version has all chrome plated, blackened the middle screen, window lines, and rearview mirrors, and equipped with 19-inch matte black wheels-you will feel like a spy standing next to the car. The set of slender LED headlights on the front face is like a squinting master, and the side lines are too tight to look like a family car. The only downside: Black car paint shows gray too easily, and the car wash shop owner will laugh when he sees you.

Interior: The plastic feel remains, but the surprise is hidden in the details

The moment I pulled the door open, I almost sighed-the center console was still a lot of hard plastic, not much different from a few years ago. But after sitting in for five minutes, I realized that something was wrong: the red stitching of this seat and the black ceiling are matched with luminous atmosphere lights, and it has a bit of "Blade Runner" flavor when it is opened at night. In addition, the 12.3-inch screen responds extremely quickly, and wireless CarPlay is connected in seconds, which is much better than the previous generation of PPT systems. The damping of the knob has also been upgraded-okay, Toyota, you win. Although it is still hard plastic, it doesn't feel so cheap to the touch.

Power and fuel consumption: transcends Buddhism, but electricity bars are the source of happiness

2.5L hybrid + drive, 225 horsepower? Don't expect a feeling of pushing back. Driving it every day is like a slow-moving roommate. If you step on the gas pedal, it thinks for three seconds before life accelerates. But the magic is the electricity meter-looking at the electric motor silently working in the energy flow chart, and the battery life + fuel consumption are both below 7 oils. The pleasure of "saving is earning" actually made me addicted. Moreover, this generation of hybrid systems is ridiculously quiet. I have to bow my head to confirm the gear even when the engine suddenly starts at a red light.

Control: Soft? That's because you don't have exercise mode

People who are used to driving German cars will probably scold it for being too light and having too soft chassis. But after switching to Sport mode, the steering wheel immediately became heavier, and the throttle response was like a chicken blood. Although I still couldn't outrun the Civic Type R, I was following the car on the mountain road, and the body almost had no roll, and the tenacity of the chassis surprised me. Has Toyota stolen anything in chassis adjustment recently? Really, the balance of comfort and support in this chassis makes me want to applaud it.

Disadvantages: Not a perfect Dark Knight

Don't rush to place an order, noise control is ancestral-tire noise makes your brain buzzing on rough roads. In addition, the legroom in the back row is only normal. If three adults sit in, someone will definitely scold her. What makes me speechless the most is the trunk: the hybrid version takes up a little space, and the opening is small, making it difficult to put a folding stroller. And that useless gearshift paddle-simulated gearshift? Who would play this crap on the Camry?

Summary: If you can accept its ordinariness, it will give you more romance than expected

The 2026 Camry Nightshade is not a performance car, not a luxury car, or even the smartest hybrid car (the Honda Accord Hybrid is easier to drive). But it has a special charm: you drive it to commute, buy groceries, pick up and pick up your children, and suddenly on a fast road late at night, you release the accelerator and let it slide, watch the power pointer dance, and listen to the 8-speaker JBL stereo. Old songs-wouldn't you think this is the most comfortable life? Of course, the premise is that you don't care too much about the hard plastic and tire noise. Anyway, I... am a little tempted.
