Although the Fiat 500 minicar and 500L station wagon have quietly withdrawn from the U.S. market, the 2023 500X will still have another year, probably because it is the only replica of the Italian brand that looks like an SUV. Don't expect it to have any off-road capabilities-although it shares the platform with Jeep Freedom, which has surprisingly off-road capabilities, the 500X has essentially no off-road performance at all. It is more suitable as a commuter car, even if its fuel economy is only moderate. It has an optional semi-convertible soft top and comes standard with a small 177-horsepower four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive. Its cute retro design makes the 500X stand out among more traditional small SUVs such as the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Kona, and Mazda CX-30, but these compact competing products drive better than it. Some of them are even more practical, as the 2023 500X's narrow rear seats and cramped luggage compartments limit its practicality.
