VF8

Vietnam-based EV startup VinFast started selling its VF8 two-row electric SUV in 2023, and when we had the chance to drive one, we felt that it needed more work. Up against rival EVs from established manufacturers, models like the Volkswagen ID.4 and Nissan Ariya, the VF8 offered competitive range and decent performance but lacked the interior polish, well-honed road manners, and user-friendly safety tech we expect at the price. Within the all-electric VinFast lineup, the VF8 slots in between the upcoming VF7 compact SUV and the current production three-row VF9. The VF8 is offered in two trims: Eco and Plus. The Eco trim is range-focused and estimated to provide a competitive 264 miles of driving on a charge. The Plus trim ups power output significantly but only offers an estimated 243 miles of range. Both trims come with standard all-wheel drive and a dual-motor powertrain that produces 348 horsepower in the Eco and 402 hp in the Plus. Outside of fitting a slightly larger 87.7-kWh battery to the 2024 model, VinFast hasn’t made any notable changes to the VF8 since we tested the 2023 car. Until we get behind the wheel of a 2025 model, we won't know if Vinfast has addressed the VF8's many teething issues.
