If you are planning to buy a new car, the SUV is probably on your shopping list. That being the case, your options are huge-whether you want a compact SUV or a full size, or something in between, SUVs cover almost all price ranges in every imaginable shape, size and powertrain configuration.

Here, we rank SUVs in each market segment based on approximately 200 data points covering acceleration performance, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel economy, cost performance, and driving pleasure. Car and Driver's ranking results come from the extensive instrument tests we conduct on hundreds of vehicles every year, as well as the subjective feelings accumulated by our professional editors during driving on real road conditions. We take rankings very seriously because we want you to know the cars you are interested in.

How We Rank

Car and Driver's ranking is based on comprehensive instrument test data we conduct on hundreds of vehicle models every year, as well as subjective evaluations by a senior editorial team during actual driving. We ranked the most affordable electric SUVs based on the manufacturer's recommended retail price (MSRP) of each model and scored each vehicle based on approximately 200 data indicators, including acceleration performance, handling, comfort, storage space, energy efficiency, value for money, and enjoyment of driving. All shortlisted electric SUVs start at less than $50,000.
