SUVs with the Best Gas Mileage

If you are thinking about buying a new car, an SUV will likely appear on your shopping list. If so, your options will be dazzlingly wide. Whether you want a compact, full size, or something in between, you can find the SUV you want at almost any price point, shape, size and power configuration.

Here, we rank the best SUVs in each market segment based on approximately 200 data indicators. These data cover acceleration performance, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, cost performance and driving pleasure. Car and Driver's rankings are based on the extensive instrument test results we conduct on hundreds of vehicles every year, as well as the subjective feelings accumulated by our expert editors during actual driving. We take rankings seriously because we want you to know the vehicles you are interested in.

How We Rank

SUVs typically use more gas than sedans and hatchbacks, but there are still many models on the market that show good fuel economy. The list covers mainstream hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure fuel SUVs of different size levels, all rated as having a combined fuel consumption of more than 33 miles per gallon.

We compiled a ranking of the most fuel-efficient SUVs based on official fuel efficiency data and ratings from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These models are sorted from high to low overall fuel consumption, but some of them may be marked with MPGe values-this "equivalent miles per gallon" indicator only applies to plug-in hybrids.
