Hybrid cars come in all shapes and sizes, from sedans, pickups, SUVs, MPVs to sports cars. Some models focus on fuel economy, while others significantly improve performance by combining gasoline and electricity. With so many hybrids, it's not easy to tell which ones are just "okay" and which ones are truly "outstanding." Therefore, we have conducted rigorous testing on almost all hybrid models.
The ranking of Car and Driver is based on the large amount of instrument test data we conduct on hundreds of vehicles every year, as well as the intuitive experience our professional editors gain when driving on real road conditions. We select the best hybrid car based on approximately 200 data points, covering acceleration performance, handling, comfort, trunk space, fuel economy, cost performance and driving pleasure. We are extremely strict about rankings because we want you to know the models you are interested in.
